Youngstown

Jake William Turner Sr., age 89, of Youngstown, Ohio, peacefully transitioned from this life on Monday, September 22, 2025, at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.

Jake was born on January 10, 1936, in Greenville, Mississippi. He was one of eleven children born to the union of Sank Turner and Ella Coleman Turner. He attended Coleman High School through the 12th grade before relocating north to Youngstown, Ohio, in 1956. Upon his arrival, he continued his education at The Rayen High School.

A dedicated and hardworking man, Jake was employed over the years with Shy Lockson Tailors, Kessler Products, and the Doris Burdman Group Homes, where he served as a Maintenance Supervisor until his retirement in 2013. Even after retirement, Jake continued to lend a helping hand to others. Known throughout the neighborhood as the “Community Handyman,” he was always willing to assist anyone in need.

Jake’s favorite pastimes included bowling, fishing, traveling, and playing solitaire on his computer. He especially enjoyed relaxing at home watching Western movies—always with a bowl of vanilla ice cream in hand. His simple joys reflected his peaceful spirit and love for life.

He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where he served in the Food Giveaway Ministry, helping to support his community with compassion and generosity.

Jake was formerly married to the late Barbara Clinkscale Turner. He is survived by his devoted wife to whom he was married to for 57 years, Dorothy Turner Turner; and by his children: Tanya (Llewellyn) Nelson, Carmen (Jerry) Cole, Minister Trina (Minister Don) Williams Sr., all of Youngstown, Ohio; Karla Turner of Macedonia, Ohio; and Reverend Karlton (Kayra) Turner of Anderson, Indiana. He was a proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind three godchildren: Alanna Hopkins, Melinda Skipper, and Tazwell Franklin III.

Jake is also survived by his siblings: Deloris Williams, Jacqueline (Robert) Murray of Greenville, Mississippi, and Leon Turner of Cleveland, Ohio, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and neighbors who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sank and Ella Turner; his children, Jake W. Turner Jr. and Elder Lana Turner Revis; his former wife, Barbara Clinkscale Turner; his sisters, Julia Seard, Rosetta Edwards, MaryAnn Devine, and Iris Robinson; and his brothers, James, Charles, Delaniro, and Renover Turner.
