Lena Hopkins

 Mrs. Lena Hopkins, 78, of Youngstown departed this life on Wednesday June 5, 2024 at Mercy Health-St Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. 

Lena was born on October 4, 1945, in Youngstown OH to the late Zerlee Foster.

She graduated from South High School. Then went on to attend Youngstown State University and obtained a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education. 

Lena worked for the Youngstown Public School system at East High School as a foreign language teacher, and eventually as a vice principal for over 30 years. Mrs. Hopkins, also known as, Ms. Hop, often acted as senior advisor for many years at East High School. Also, she was a vice principal at Chaney High School.

After retiring from teaching, she worked for H&R Block as a tax professional for over 15 years.

Lena was a member of the NAACP, Black Caucus, and Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., Alpha Nu Chapter.

Her passions were teaching, learning, traveling, and most of all helping to mold the youth of the Youngstown area. She found joy in teaching others. She was a true advocate for education. 

Lena was a member of New Bethal Baptist church for over 50 years. She served on the usher board and education committee and in the role of the vacation bible school director.

She leaves to cherish and honor her memory, three daughters , Faye Roberts, Lisa Robinson and Nicole Hopkins; 5 grandchildren( 2 brothers,Kenny and Gregory Foster; her sister, Delores Winthrop, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was proceeded in death by her husband, Alvin Hopkins; her mother Zerlee Foster, and siblings-Barbara Woods, Curtis Woods, Nathaniel Murray.

Lena Hopkins will be missed by all those who lives she touched.

A homegoing celebration service will be held 12:00 P.M. Tuesday June 17 2024 at New Bethel Baptist Church where a visitation with the family will be from 11:00 to 12:00 followed by the service.
