Maxine Gibbs

Maxine Gibbs- Maxine Gibbs, 74, departed this life Saturday, April 4, 2020 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.


Maxine was born June 28, 1945, in Mobile, Ala., a daughter of McKinley and Ernestine Milender. She was a 1965 South High School graduate and studied nursing at a community college in Washington, D.C. She was a former member of Greater Friendship Baptist Church, was an employee at the Youngstown Community Action Counsel as a Head Start assistant, was head cook for Youngstown Board of Education, and cooked at the Pyatt Street Market.
Maxine was passionate about cooking and caring for the ill, especially cooking delicious homemade meals.
She leaves her children, Ramona (Eric) Jordan, Rev. Isaac (Charlene) Black Jr., Doris Josephine Black, Willie (LaToya) Gibbs and Francis (Chauntie Watson) Gibbs;  a grandson, whom she reared, Antwan Milender; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.


She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; Willie Edward Gibbs Sr., whom she married Oct. 25, 1975 and who passed in 2006; siblings, Alfred and Winfred Milender, and Paulette Hudson; and a grandson, whom she reared, Anthony Milender.
A private family viewing will take place 3 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2020 at the F. D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home, Inc.

Tasha, Josie, Ike, Willie, Francis, Antwan, i am so very sorry for your loss. Maxine was a one of a kind lady. She was fun, loved family and her food was AMAZING! I will miss you cousin. Willie Gibbs Jr you and your family have my sympathy on the loss of your dear mother. As a young child Mrs. Gibbs was always nice to me and welcomed me into your home and treated me as one of her own. May the lord be of comfort to you and your family during these difficult times.
